Female Hair Loss. My hair was thick and now it has thinned out so much I have bald spots. I'm only 24!?

Growing up my hair was so thick when I braided it, it was the size of my fist. now, within the past year, it has thinned out so much a braid is only the width of my pinky. Does anyone know what could be causing this to happen? Or what I can do to reverse it? I have been using Mane-and-Tail shampoo and taking Vitamin B supplements but it has been getting worse. When I put my hair in a ponytail I actually can see bald spots. please help me.

I'm a 24 year old female.
Full Time Student (no health insurance)
Well balanced diet (I cheat only once a week)
Diagnosed with Chronic Migraines.
Currently taking Tri-Sprintec(birth control)
Fioricet and Sumatriptan(for migranes)
No history of hair thinning in my family(not even the men!)

Please help me.

Oral contraceptives have become one of the most popular forms of birth control used today. Millions of women use oral contraceptives, but very few are aware that these birth control pills are the common cause of hair loss, for many who use them. Women are then advised to be aware of the devastating effects of these birth control pills in the normal growth of their hair.

My suggestion is trying to absorb as much information as you can before making up your mind,here

is a good one.

It could be your birth control. I've really only heard of depo provera birth control shot doing this, but I suppose it could happen with a pill. See if you can change your prescription and see if that helps.

It could be caused by your birth control, or you could have alopecia. Check with your doctor to know the real root of the problem.

The Nuva-ring also causes hair loss, so look into what people say about your birth control and if it gives them hair loss.

as we know hair loss can be caused by many different reasons! there are many causes of loss of hair such as stress, poor nutrition ,medications, thyroid dysfunctions, illness, fungal infections, hormonal problems, to mention a few.

year ago I suffered very much from dandruff and hair loss too and I started trying everything you can imagine to stop my hair loss.
the things that really worked for me was:

1) Vitamin a - an anti-oxidant which promotes healthy production of sebum in the scalp;

2) Vitamin E stimulates circulation. Good blood circulation in the scalp is important in keeping hair follicles productive. The 'B' vitamins contribute to melanin, which gives hair its healthy color and also stimulates blood circulation;

3) massage is also beneficial. Massage stimulates circulation. As already noted, good circulation in the scalp keeps hair follicles active. Experts suggest a few minutes of daily head massage by hand. Circulation through massage may be improved by using a few drops of lavender or bay essential oil in an almond or sesame oil base with massage;

4) Try rubbing your scalp with garlic juice, Onion Juice or Ginger Juice(you can either of one out of three, do not mix any of two or three);

5) also I used herbal treatment - Provillus (do not use Rogaine - it will not work!)
It is a good products that helps prevent hair loss and contains Biotin and the clinically tested ingredients approved by the FDA to help re-grow your hair.! I think it is very important!

It worked and still works for me!

I do not know if any pharmacies carry Provillus but I do know that you should purchase it directly from the manufacturer and read more about the product here http://www.provillus.com/?aid=221781

It enhances hair growth by blocking DHT (Dihydrotestostrone) - a major cause of hair loss!

Also Informative video about Provillus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ydvCHhbR…

good luck!

first off, sorry to hear that. second, Mane and tail shampoo is one of the worst shampoos on earth ( I can say this because I fell for its shiteous promise as well)!! there are many factors involved. I like yourself am 24 and full time student and know that I have lost my hair due to stress from school and being sick. You should go on www.cosmeticsdatabase.com, find a shampoo on there that has the least amount of bad chemicals (it lists them for you) and use it. I also believe that rogaine would be a great investment. give that a try for a couple of months (the female one, the male one is too strong). If that doesn't work you should consult a specialist. I know they have this new way of producing hair for females and males which involves ultraviolet lighting of the scalp but it is pretty costly (perhaps 1,000 to 3,000 dollars).
