So what is the cause of hair loss? it has been determined, by scientific studies, that the primary cause of hair loss in men, is DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is formed by the male testosterone combining with the enzyme, 5 alpha reductase, to form DHT.
The DHT circulates through the blood stream and will eventually attach itself to a hair follicle. when it does this it chokes off nutrients to the follicle and the hair strand. This will interrupt the normal hair cycle. This cycle is for the it to grow for two to six years, at about a quarter of an inch a month or six inches a year. it then rests for a few months and then falls out. to be replaced by a new strand.
When DHT attaches itself to the follicle, choking off the nutrients, this cycle actually reverses it self. The strand grows for about six months, and then falls out. because of the lack of nutrients, the strand is also thinner.
DHT will also cause the follicle to shrink. This shrinking will eventually cause the follicle to die not allowing it to grow hair again.
So the key to controlling hair loss is to control the formation of DHT through controlling testosterone, the 5 alpha reductase enzyme or DHT. Controlling testosterone in males is not the way I would go, but there are products on the market that can control the 5 alpha reductase enzyme and/or DHT. they all have been proven to stop hair loss and in some of cases, re-grow some of the lost hair.

DNA evidence is obtained from a hair strand even if the follicle is not intact. When the nucleus dies, the DNA fragments but it does not disappear. It is true that is is very difficult to get conclusive data from hair strands with no follicle, but it is still possible.
