I bet you thought that male pattern baldness was confined only to men. What if I told you that women can get what is called female pattern baldness, too. in fact close to 40 million women in the United States have this condition. It is also known as androgenic alopecia. the same term that describes male pattern baldness.
Now the cause of this is not the same in women as it is in men. in men it is caused by DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is developed from testosterone combing with the 5 alpha reductase enzyme. This DHT then circulates through the blood stream, where it attaches to the hair follicle. This causes nutrients to be stopped from going to the follicle and hair strand. Thus causing the hair to fall out and the follicle to eventually wither and die.
Now in women, they do not have the same levels of testosterone that men do. This means they have much less levels of DHT that men do. so women are not as susceptible to hair loss caused by DHT as men are.
So what is female pattern baldness? This condition is a thinning of hair throughout the entire scalp. plus women may see a gradual widening of the part line, in the middle of the scalp.
What causes this condition? the causes of this hair loss condition are not known at this time. It is believed that this condition is caused by:
- Genes - If you have a family history of pattern baldness, either male or female, then it is believed that you may also develop this condition.
- Aging - This is believed to be a cause of baldness in both women and men.
- Androgens - which is primarily the male hormone but present in woman to a lesser extent. Changes in these hormones when a woman goes through menopause are believed to cause hair loss.
What can I do about it? if you just have slight thinning of the hair, creative hair styling may be all you have to do to cover your thinning. the only product approved for woman to treat hair loss, is minoxidil at a strength of 2%. the other one approved Propecia. This is only approved for use by men, because it has shown to produce birth defects.
The other thing you can do is change your diet. One that is low in red meat, high in soy and fish products has been demonstrated to produce healthy hair.

DNA evidence is obtained from a hair strand even if the follicle is not intact. When the nucleus dies, the DNA fragments but it does not disappear. It is true that is is very difficult to get conclusive data from hair strands with no follicle, but it is still possible.
Don't be sorry or anything, I'm always up for an intellectual conversation.
