I am 26 and I my hair has been thinning now for about 5 years due to the male pattern baldness that runs in my family. I saw in Boots the other day that there's now some expensive treatments for baldness, but I was wondering are any of them effective or are they just a waste of money?
having worked for drug companies, most have limited effects. There is a private prescription you can get, ask your GP you may not pay for the prescription, but you will pay for the drug and also extra when you hand in the prescription to your pharmacist. the drug is called Finasteride 1mg (cant get an NHS prescription), the 5mg dose is used for men with prostate problems, but its the 1mg option you need. this has an 80% effectiveness rating.
But of course it costs, but if you are that worried, you can easily waste a lot of money buting shelf stuff. A good rule of thumb is anything you can buy in Boots on shelves is fairly harmless, anything you have to ask for over the counter has stronger drugs and anything by prescription is controlled for a reason.
So.... if you can just pick up the cure yourself, chances are its not the best...
*** My Success with Natural Techniques To Re-grow Lost Hair
Been on minoxidil ( R0gaine® ) for about a year and a half and have not seen even the smallest amount of regrowth that i almost fell into depression.
My hair only started visibly growing on the bald spot after skeptically trying out the various natural techniques to re-grow lost hair @ http://www.regrowmyhair.info
I would highly recommend this easy to follow step-by-step guide with pictures to anyone who is suffering from hair loss right now. But remember this isn't a miracle cure for baldness as you will also need to put in some effort in order to see results. and its only a minimum commitment of 15 minutes a day to help re-grow your lost hair.
Anyway, its also a cheaper and effective way of re-growing lost hair compared to those unnatural ways which may involve harsh chemicals that may have side effects.
There's only two male hair loss drugs clinically tested and FDA approved : Minoxidil (Rogaine and other brands) and Finasteride (Proscar, Propecia, etc.), there are some interesting drugs too like Dutasteride or Follica but there aren't enough studies yet.
If you're into natural stuff, the only one that might be helpful is Saw Palmeto (there are capsules for sale in natural shops) because it contains anti androgens similar to the ones found on Propecia.
Minoxidil if you buy generic brands it's quite cheap and Proscar if you get the generic version it's reasonably cheap and will last you a long time.
Quite frankly all the other stuff are either placebos or scams.

The first and most obvious step that you should do is to check out the person in your family that has had MBP and see if they tried any type of hair loss therapy and if it worked or not. Barring that there are a lot of information websites that will give you a direction in which way to look. check out the source link for one of them.
Hi maitreya, I suggest you give minoxidil a try, and also observe proper hair care. you can read about minoxidil and hair care at this very informative site here:

Have a nice day.
Early baldness correlates with higher testosterone levels so be proud and be bald. whatever you do, don't comb it over, ever!
